The GLOBALGAP Standard of Good Agricultural Practices in the European Retail Sector is the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP: Good Agriculture Practice) protocol of the European Retailers Agricultural Products Working Group (EUREP: Euro Retailer Produce Working Group). In order to carry out studies on this protocol, a private non-profit association with its headquarters in Germany was established in 1999. The purpose of this association is to determine the minimum standards required for agricultural products grown in their own countries and imported from abroad in order to ensure that large retailers in the European Union countries can ensure the healthy consumption of agricultural products in their communities.
Producer organizations or companies that have obtained the GLOBALGAP Certificate, based on this idea, ensure that the agricultural products they produce are of higher quality, and that they are prioritized in the markets of the countries they produce and export. Especially in recent years, important problems have been experienced in the export of agricultural products in our country in terms of pesticide residues. This situation negatively affected the image of Turkish agricultural products, and many of our exported products returned. GLOBALGAP Certification, with this type of negativity began to be preferred by many manufacturers because it eliminates the risk and is an important step for Turkey.
GLOBALGAP supports the continuous development of methods and technologies related to agriculture based on the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Crop Management (ICM).
With the GLOBALGAP Certificate; It is documented that it does not contain chemical, physical and microbiological residues harmful to human health, that it is produced without polluting the environment and damaging the natural balance, that it does not adversely affect the people or other living creatures related to production during production, and that the processes are carried out in accordance with the agricultural legislation of the country where the consumer is located and the country where the product is grown.
As a result; Considering that the retailers in Europe import from all over the world, the importance of food safety has increased due to the increase of competition among themselves. Therefore, in order to be permanent in the market, they must give guarantee and assurance to their customers that the products they put on their shelves will not be harmful. HACCP, BRC, IFS, GLOBALGAP Certificates provide retailers with the guarantee and assurance they need.
The importance of protecting the "brand value" underlies the reasons for the emergence of this type of standard. This subject for retailers; Customer pressure and perception have become more important as a result of media pressure and analysis, legal obligations and decrease in sales.
HACCP, BRC, IFS, GLOBALGAP Certificates have become a commercial "ticket" in that they are a prerequisite for being a supplier of many companies and generally include the required minimum food safety requirements.
